about
I wrote this song for my friend Samwise (Brett Wilshe) who is currently hiking the Appalachian Trail and documenting his journey, both his triumphs and tribulations, for all of us to follow. It was a lot of fun to try to write from his perspective a bit. The cover photo was taken by Samwise somewhere along his journey.
lyrics
I counted out the days in terms of rations
The time has passed for me to change my mind
I’m heading for the mighty Appalachians
Forget about the life i left behind
There’s only so much staying put can give ya
And even less that ends up worth the while
‘cause it ain’t yours if you can’t take it with ya
And I would trade my kingdom for a smile
Titles ain't worth nothing when you measure life in miles
I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the road I’m on
And I won’t ask for nothing if it gets me where I’m going
And It’s ok go slow
Forward’s the only way to go
I’ll aim for where the mountains meet the sky
Cold wind, warm sun
And rainy days are bound to come
But I’m born to roam
The trail’s my home
And I know that I’ll be just fine on my own
I had myself a lover in the city
She always let the living get her down
I told her when I left I’d keep her with me
But I was never one to stick around
And now I see her pretty face in every lonely town
And if I stay too long I think that I might drown
And if I don’t catch you this time, I will next time around
So It’s ok go slow
Forward’s the only way to go
I’ll aim for where the Mountains meet the sky
Cold wind, warm sun
And Rainy days are bound to come
But I’m born to roam
The trail’s my home
And I know that I’ll be just fine on my own
Don’t you wait for me
I’m leaving in the morning
Everything you see
can disappear without a warning
But you won’t see me crying when it’s gone
The trail can be so cold and unforgiving
I feel as though my feet are breaking down
They say that life is only for the living
But sometimes it’ll kick you when you’re down
And every muscle in me begs to stop and turn around
But this life is the only one I know
And I don’t know where I'll be when there is nowhere else to go
Off the road, you always seem to miss it
And right when I thought I could settle down
I just spent my last dollar on a ticket
I don’t know where it’s going, but I know I”m going with it
Things won’t be familiar while
But that don’t seem to matter when you measure life in miles
